Foreign Minister Discusses Prisoner Release with Hamas Leader

  • Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Monday held a call with Ismail Haniyeh, leader of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, a ministry source told Reuters, adding the two discussed the release of civilian prisoners held by the group. Monday's call marks the first official announcement of contact between Ankara and Hamas, whose members Turkey has hosted for years.
  • Speaking to Ekonomi in the first days of the Israel-Hamas conflict, a maritime industry representatives signalled that developments in the Eastern Mediterranean could negatively affect Turkey's foreign trade towards the region. Since then, the movement of goods between Turkey-Palestine has stopped completely while exports to Israel have fallen by over 50%, according to the newspaper.
