FRANCE: Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian seeking meeting of EU foreign
ministers on July 13 to discuss recent incident between French and Turkish
warships in the Mediterranean.
- Both France and Turkey ate NATO members and take part in NATO's Operation Sea
Guardian, which seeks to curtail terrorist or people trafficking activity or the
hindrance of maritime routes in the Med.
- Today France announced the suspension of their role following an incident on
June 10 in which Turkish sailors impeded a French inspection of a vessel the
French believed to be in breach of a UN arms embargo on Libya.
- Relations between France and Turkey have hit multi-year lows recently, with
President Macron saying Turkey was "playing a dangerous game" in its materiel
and air support and provision of Syrian fighters to the Tripoli-based
UN-recognised Libyan gov't against the forces of General Haftar's Libyan
National Army.
- Paris has been accused of supporting the LNA politically due to Haftar's fight
against Islamist militants in Libya.
