Foreign Ministry Point to American Intelligence for Pipeline Damage

RUSSIA
  • Putin is due to be holding a video conference later today with intelligence chiefs across the CIS, at which the damage to the Nord Stream pipeline will likely be raised for discussion.
  • The foreign ministry this morning stated that the incident on the Nord Stream pipeline occurred in a zone controlled by American intelligence services – further clouding the disagreements around responsibility for the damage. According to Kommersant, economy ministry officials are anticipating moderate impacts from further sanctions on their fuel and energy complex.
  • BBG cite a Biden admin official as saying that the US and allies are planning for further sanctions against Russia, with lawmakers protesting that the restrictions so far haven’t deterred Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
  • President Putin is also due to hold a call with Turkish President Erdogan following the withdrawal of the Mir payment system from Turkish commercial banks – the latest sign that Turkey are leaning toward the West after trying to remain relatively neutral throughout the Ukraine invasion.
