US: Former CNBC host Michelle Caruso-Cabrera has filed to run against left-wing
first-term Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in the Democratic primary for
New York's 14th congressional district.
- Ocasio-Cortez (commonly known as AOC) gained major media attention when she
won the Democratic primary for NY's 14th, defeating 10-term incumbent Joe
Crowley. Since then, and on taking office following the 2018 mid-terms, she has
gone on to create a vast social media presence and become a figurehead for the
Democratic party's left-wing, drawing the ire of President Trump and
conservative commentators.
- Caruso-Cabrera has written extensively on her opposition to 'big government'
and support for free markets, while remaining a registered Democrat.
- The likelihood of AOC losing her seat is slim, but the entry of the well-known
and also media-savvy Caruso-Cabrera into the race is likely to bring even
greater media attention to the primary race for NY's 14th district.
- AOC has been mooted as a potential future Democratic presidential candidate, a
prospect that could be derailed or extinguished by a loss to Caruso-Cabrera.
