Former President FW De Klerk Dies Aged 85

Joint Nobel Peace Prize winner and former President of South Africa Frederik Willem 'FW' de Klerk has died at the age of 85 according to the FW de Klerk Foundation. A statement said "Former President FW de Klerk died peacefully at his home in Fresnaye earlier this morning following his struggle against mesothelioma cancer".

  • De Klerk was the last state president of apartheid South Africa, and served in the role until Nelson Mandela became South Africa's first president elected via universal suffrage in 1994.
  • His efforts are viewed by many as crucial in contributing towards the dismantling of the apartheid system in South Africa, and he shared the Peace Prize with his successor Mandela in 1993.
