Former President Nicolas Sarkozy Handed 3-Yr Jail Term For Corruption

FRANCE

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been handed a three year jail term in a landmark sentencing that makes the centre-right politician the first French head of state to be imprisoned. Sarkozy served one term as president from 2007 to 2012 representing the Gaullist Union for a Popular Movement before his defeat to Socialist Party candidate Francois Hollande.

  • Sarkozy will not head to prison immediately, with his legal team expected to appeal against the sentence during which he will remain free. Also two of the three years in prison have been suspended, and the remaining year may be served under house arrest or with an electronic ankle bracelet.
  • Sarkozy was found guilty of attempting to bribe a magistrate to gain information about a criminal investigation into his party.
