Speaking in the National Assembly, PM Michel Barnier lays out the policy agenda for his new gov't. Livestream (in English) here. Barnier says that a 'reduction of the deficit is part of our policy priorities...the debt pile will weigh on our children if we don't act now....the deficit is making France weaker in Europe, we have no choice but to turn around the public finances.'
- Barnier: 'I plan to reduce the deficit to 5% of GDP in 2025 and 3% by 2029....The first remedy to reduce debt is to bring down spending...In 2025 2/3 of the turnaround effort will be driven by spending cuts'.
- Barnier: 'The budget situation also requires targeted measures on tax policy...We will ask large companies and the richest part of the population to contribute to the effort to turn around the public finances'.
- PM “Our taxes are among the highest in the world. The situation of our accounts requires a targeted effort limited in time. A shared effort in a demand for tax justice.”
- Barnier: 'We will pursue our investments in nuclear energy, including new EPR reactors'.
- Calls on deputies to look at the situation 'through lucid eyes' and asks for groups to work together. Unlikely, with leftist NFP seeking the gov'ts ouster at the soonest opportunity.
- The PM is delivering his speech in an extremely rancorous Assembly chamber. Leftist deputies frequently shouting and trying to drown out Barnier as he outlines his policy objectives.
