France Push Measures to Protect Gas

A draft bill released by France this week will let the country take control of gas-powered electricity generation plants if gas supplies are threatened or order power generation via gas to be restricted or suspended.

  • France is trying to put measures in place ahead of winter as gas supplies for Europe look uncertain after swathes of Russian supply cuts in recent weeks. Europe faces further pressure when Nord Stream 1 is shut July 11-22 for maintenance but there are fears that Russia may extend the shutdown.
  • The draft bill now needs approval by parliament.
