France Withdraw 1/3 Of UK Water Fishing Applications As Deadline Looms

Joe Barnes as the Daily Telegraph tweets: "UK-France fishing update: UK has approved 15 out of 47 applications for French boats to operate in our 6 to 12 mile zone. There are 15 applications where evidence is limited, but could still be licensed. A further 17 applications have been withdrawn because of 'poor evidence'."

  • Fisheries remains one of the hot-button issues in EU-UK and Franco-British relations, with a fair amount of ambiguity in the matter allowing both sides to argue their cases.
  • The political temperature in the English Channel is only likely to rise over the coming months as the French presidential election in spring 2022 approaches. For the presidential candidates presenting a hard-line stance against the British has long proved an effective vote-winner.
  • At the end of the month the deadline set by the government of Jersey for French vessels to apply and provide evidence for the granting of fishing licences expires. After this point Jersey and the UK could seek to bar French vessels from entering UK/Jersey waters, risking a major uptick in political tensions.
