FREIGHT: LNG-Fuelled Vessels Accelerate to 6% of Global Fleet: SEA-LNG

Industry coalition SEA-LNG reports that active LNG-fuelled vessels now account for more than 2% of the global shipping fleet, PortNews reported.

  • Once the current order book is accounted for, this number rises to 4% of vessels, or 6% by DWT.
  • Numbers have grown from 21 LNG-fuelled vessels operating in 2010 to 590 today, including the world’s largest container ships. A further 564 LNG-fuelled vessels are on order.
  • In addition, there are 772 LNG carriers in operation, with a further 341 on order.
  • 2-stroke diesel cycle engines account for approximately 75% of the LNG-fuelled vessel order book, PortNews said.
  • LNG as a fuel has virtually zero SOx emissions and a 23% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions.
  • LNG bunkering is currently available at 185 ports, with a further 50 being added in 2025.
