Frontrunner Castillo Cancels Fujimori Debate

  • Frontrunner Pedro Castillo has announced he will not participate in a debate scheduled for May 15, that he had previously proposed. Analyst's believe the previous debate with Keiko Fujimori was partially to blame for the most recent turnaround in polling statistics. It is expected that Fujimori's polling momentum may gather speed following the cancellation.
  • USDPEN has continued to see traction to the downside, reaching lows of 3.6585 during yesterday's session and consolidating gains of around 0.5%. Yesterday's lows matched levels seen on April 19th, following the first major Sunday poll. Further out, the lows post the election reside at 3.61.
  • Elsewhere, there's too much uncertainty to review Peru's sovereign credit rating before the second round of presidential elections scheduled for June 6, said Livia Honsel, director and lead analyst for sovereign ratings in Latin America at S&P Global Ratings.
  • The runoff will be "critical," but regardless of who wins, governability will be challenging as congress is likely to support populist measures
    • S&P rates Peru as BBB+, three notches above high-yield and has a stable outlook on the country.
