Frost To Give Speech On NI Protocol As Art.16 Speculation Mounts
UK Cabinet Office minister Lord Frost is set to deliver a speech in Lisbon, Portugal later today on the ongoing row between the UK and EU over the implementation of the Northern Ireland protocol of the Brexit withdrawal agreement. Speculation continues that the UK could seek to invoke Art.16 of the protocol, which would see it suspended to allow for smoother NI-GB trade, but risking NI-RoI stability and a hard border on the island of Ireland.
- Speech set to begin around 1615CET (1015ET, 1515BST) and can be watched on the No.10 Downing St. YouTube link here.
- Relations between the two sides remain in a poor state, with Frost and Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney engaging in a Twitter spat over the weekend. On RTE Coveney accused the UK side of never being happy with the offer on the table, saying that "When David Frost accuses me of raising issues on social media, it's a bit rich, quite frankly,...He is briefing British media to say: 'The EU can make the changes they need to make, but it's not enough. We want more.'"
- Frost expected to add more detail to the UK demands made for the protocol in the summer Command Paper before the EU issues its official counter-offer tomorrow.
- A number of media outlets identifying France as a potential obstacle for the UK, with the French gov't angry over the AUKUS alliance and the ongoing disagreement over fishing rights in the English Channel resulting in Paris pushing other EU member states into a hard-line stance on UK demands.
