Gaza Ceasefire Talks Frozen Amid Renewed Exchange Of Fire

ISRAEL

Israeli media report that Brig. Gen. Ghassan Alian, who serves as the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (de facto military liaison to the Palestinians), told Egyptian mediators that Israel halted ceasefire talks due to fresh volleys of rockets being fired from the Gaza Strip by Islamic Jihad militants. The official reportedly informed the Egyptians that Israel will not negotiate under fire.

  • Renewed rocket attacks came after a 13-hour period of silence, which had raised hopes for progress in ceasefire negotiations. The main obstacle was reportedly Israel's refusal to abandon its policy of targeted assassinations of Palestinian militants. An Israeli official told the media today that besides disrupting the PIJ's chain of command, targeted killings also send a "message to Hamas and other terror organisations."
