German FM: We Will Look To Ways to Unblock EU Funds

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas has stated that the German government, in its capacity as chair of the European Council presidency, will 'continue to look for a solution to unblock EU funds'.

  • This comes a day after the progress towards enactment of the next EU long-term budget was held up by the ambassadors to the EU of Hungary and Poland. The gov'ts of both countries had opposed the introduction of a mechanism linking EU fund distribution to rule of law provisions. As such, both the Hungarian and Polish ambassadors to the EU withheld their approval from a written procedure that would allow the European Commission to increase its Own Resources (capital raised by the Commission itself, rather than from member states).
  • Without unanimity there it no path to progress for the long-term budget or its associated COVID-19 recovery package.
