NATGAS: German Gas Demand Fell 16.5% in Week to Dec. 22

German natural gas consumption in the week to Dec. 22 decreased 16.5% from the previous week to 11.4% below the 2018-21 average, Bnetza data showed. Industrial demand fell by 11.8% from the high the previous week while demand from households and small businesses fell 21.7%.

  • Industrial gas consumption fell to 1,847GWh/d in the week compared to 2023 levels of 1,459GWh and 0.75% below the 2018-21 average. Gas consumption from electricity generation is also included in the data.
  • Demand from households and small businesses was down to 1,483GWh/d last week, compared to 1,637GWh/d in 2023 and 21.8% below the 2018-21 average.
  • German gas demand stood just 2.25% below the 2018-21 average the week prior.
  • Natural gas inventories in Germany are down to 81.12% full on Dec. 28 from 82.68% a week ago, with withdrawals rising back above normal since Dec. 26.
