German Gas Demand Just 9.8% Below Normal in December

Overall German gas consumption in December was just 9.8% below the 2018 - 2021 average compared to 27.2% below in November according to the Bundesnetzagentur.

  • The German network regulator yesterday said a gas shortage is becoming increasingly unlikely in the present winter season, but savings efforts remain the key. The regulator is targeting a 20% demand reduction over the winter period.
  • Household and business consumption was just 4.4% below normal in December and Industry was 15.4% below.
  • Cold weather in the middle of the December sent consumption back above normal after low demand due to a warm start to the winter in November. Week 50 saw gas demand 12% above normal but the warm end to December saw week 51 and 52 demand 26.7% below normal.
  • Consumption in January is currently expected to fall back well below normal as the warm weather in Europe is forecast to last at least until the middle of the month.
