German Gas Levy Necessary and Not For "Freeloaders": Habeck

The German levy on consumers is necessary to ensure Germany's security of supply and less than 10% of the levy would go to "freeloaders" according to Economy Minister Robert Habeck on Tuesday

  • The levy has been heavily criticized because energy companies which aren’t in trouble can also benefit.
  • The levy imposed on German households from Oct. 1 until March 2024 is to help utilities cover the cost of replacing Russian supplies.
  • Habeck has previously warned that Germany’s biggest gas supplier Uniper could collapse if they were forced to withdraw the new levy.
  • The German cabinet is meeting on Tuesday to discuss the energy crisis. One option being considered is to ban dividends from firms receiving the aid.
