German LNG Terminals Importing Less Than Dutch Terminals

Germany’s newly built LNG terminals have imported significantly less LNG in the past heating period than the existing Dutch Gate and Eemshaven LNG terminals, ICIS LNG Edge data showed.

  • Germany’s LNG facilities Wilhelmshaven, Brunsbuettel, Lubmin, Mukran and Stade have imported around 400,000-500,000 tons/month, compared with imports of around 1mn tons/month at the Dutch LNG import terminals Gate and Eemshaven (see chart).
  • To point out, a land-based, established terminal is much larger than the rapidly built new FSRUs in Germany.
  • The German LNG facilities have faced some technical challenges in their early operations with the Lubmin terminal located in a shallow bay, which required cargoes to be shuttled via smaller ships, and Brunsbuettel needed works on the connecting pipelines, Alex Froley, ICIS LNG analyst, said.
