German Natural Gas Demand Fell 36.6% MoM In May

German total natural gas consumption stood at an average of 1.62TWh/d in May, compared with the 2018-21 average of 2.02TWh/d and down by 36.6% from a month earlier, Bnetza data showed.

  • Natural gas consumption from households and businesses saw the largest month on month decline and stood at 458GWh/d in May, down from 1.03TWh/d in April but demand remained above last year’s levels.
  • Demand from industry declined by 18% on the month to 1.08TWh/d in May.
  • Industrial demand remained below pre-pandemic levels in Germany, with little signs of rebounding industrial consumption of gas, underscored by weaker-than-expected German output data released on Wednesday.
  • German industrial production rose by 0.3% month on month in April, less than economists expected at 0.6%, according to the German Economy Ministry. Industrial production rose by 1.6% year on year but remained below pre-Covid levels.
  • German gas storage reserves stood at 76.15% of capacity on 7 June, up from 74.96% a week earlier, AGSI data showed.
