POWER: German Power Demand 2.6% Below Average in First Half of January

German power demand so far this month averaged 56.37GW, tracking a 2.6% decline versus the five-year average, despite colder-than-average temperatures. 

  • The five-year average power demand on 1-13 January averaged 57.87GW – with the highest demand seen in 2022 and the lowest since 2023.
  • Looking ahead, the latest ECWMF forecast suggested demand to average 56.52GW the next five days.
  • Mean temperatures in Dusseldorf averaged 2.8C on 1-13 January this year, compared with the seasonal average of 3.1C. 
  • The 6-10 day ECWMF weather forecast suggested mean temperatures in Dusseldorf to drop later this week, before trending back higher early next week.
