German Regulator Increasing Optimism Around Winter Gas Supply

NATURAL GAS

The German gas market is in an ‘encouraging’ situation according to the energy regulator today.

  • "If we continue to meet our savings target of at least 20% in Germany, if three LNG terminals start operating at the beginning of next year at the latest, and if the expected winter-related decline in imports and the rise in currently low exports remain moderate, then we can get through the winter without a national gas emergency," the regulator said.
  • The regulator has modelled four scenarios for winter 2022/23 that factor in different various weather, import and export scenarios as well as differing demand. The regulator said only one of the four scenarios provided the possibility of a gas emergency.
  • The worst-case scenario brings about the emergency at the end of February.
  • German gas storage is nearing full capacity at over 96.5% in the latest report.
