GERMANY DEC RETAIL SALES -5.5% M/M, +0.0%Y/Y

  • German retail sales came in over four points below market expectations today, falling to -5.5% m/m in December from +0.6% m/m in November The forecast was a significantly smaller contraction of -1.4%.
  • On the year, retail sales stalled at 0.0%, largely missing the expected increase of +3.4%.
  • In 2021, retail sales expanded by only +0.7% in real terms. Apparel suffered stark losses for the second consecutive year, as shop-based retail trade felt the pressure of the pandemic-induced restrictions.
