German September Gas Demand 26.6% Below 2018-21 Average

NATURAL GAS

German natural gas consumption in September stood at 1.296TWh/d, down by 11.5% year on year and 26.6% below the 2018-2021 average, largely driven by lower consumption from small business and households, Bnetza data showed.

  • Gas consumption from households and small businesses stood at 239GWh/d in September, down by 41% year on year and around 42% below the 2018-2021 average. This is partly due to temperatures well above the 2018-2021 average throughout the month.
  • Industrial gas use in September was broadly in line with last year’s levels at 1.057TWh/d but demand continued to lag the 2018-2021 average levels by 16.8%.
  • German gas output for electricity generation stood at 7.26TWh in September, or a share of 19.6% of total power generation. This is up from 3.92TWh, or a share of 9.44% of the total power generation in September last year, data from Fraunhofer ISE showed. This year-on-year increase is partly due to Germany’s halt to nuclear generation, despite higher renewables output year on year.
  • Natural gas consumption last week stood 30.8% below the 2018-2021 average.
  • German natural gas storages stood at 96.55% of capacity as of 3 October, up from 95.17% a week earlier.
