German Weekly Gas Demand Rose Above Average on Heating Demand

German natural gas consumption last week rose 11.9% above the 2018-2021 average, driven by increased heating demand as temperatures fell well below the seasonal norm, Bnetza data showed.

  • Demand stood 19.9% below the average in the week prior.
  • Temperatures last week stood 5.6° C above the 2018-21 average.
  • Natural gas consumption from households and small businesses surged to 2,427GWh/d last week, up from 1,556GWh/d the week prior. Demand stood well above the 2018-2021 average of 2,116GWh/d.
  • Industrial gas use last week rose to 2,263GWh/d, up from 1,594GWh/d the week prior and above the 2018-21 average of 2,074GWh/d.
  • German gas stocks stood at 83.17% of capacity as of 16 January, down from 87.6% a week earlier, GIE data showed.
