GERMANY: Bild-SPD To Meet On Chancellor Candidate Question Tonight

GERMANY

Bild reports that senior figures within the governing centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) will meet on the evening of 19 Nov to discuss who should be the party's chancellor candidate in the early federal election due on 23 Feb. As MNI noted earlier (see 'GERMANY: Def Min-Cable Severing 'Sabotage'; Leads Scholz In Chancellor Polling', 1037GMT), questions have been raised about Chancellor Olaf Scholz's popularity, with Defence Minister Boris Pistorius polling much better than the incumbent.

  • Bild reports the meeting will involve "Only the two party leaders Saskia Esken and Lars Klingbeil, General Secretary Matthias Miersch and the five deputy SPD chairmen..." Notably, the meeting will take place while Scholz is in the air, returning from the G20 summit in Brazil (although he could call in).
  • INSA polling for Bild shows Pistorius as the most popular politician nationwide, scoring 52.8 in INSA's rankings. This puts him ahead of Christian Social Union (CSU) leader and Bavarian Minister-President Markus Soeder (46.0), NorthRhine-Westphalia Minister President Hendrik Wust (43.7) and main opposition conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader Friedrich Merz (41.5). Conversely, Scholz is the worst performer of the 20 senior politicians in the survey, scoring 31.4.
  • Most senior SPD figures have come out in support of Scholz, but there is no guarantee that this backing will remain if there is a notable groundswell in grassroots support for Pistorius. Former SPD leader Sigmar Gabriel is the highest-profile name to call for a change in chancellor candidate.
