(MNI) London - German gov't officials have confirmed that Chancellor Olaf Scholz will hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 summit, taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil next week. The gov't official says that in the 19 Nov meeting, the two leaders will discuss the war in Ukraine and 'economic issues'.
- Relations between China and the EU have been strained in recent weeks following the imposition of higher tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles entering the Union. However, Germany was one of the few nations that voted against the imposition of tariffs. After the imposition of the duties, Reuters reported that the Chinese gov't had instructed carmakers to pause investment in those nations that voted for tariffs, while favouring those that opposed them.
- Germany's close economic ties to China have long seen it sit as a voice in the EU that, if not overtly pro-Beijing like Hungary, then is at least anti-tariff.
- As such there will be focus in Beijing on outcome of the upcoming German federal election, likely to be held on 23 Feb. The centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) are favourites to take on the chancellery.
- Reuters reported in 2023 that CDU leader Friedrich Merz has "called for Berlin to involve key allies in negotiations with China as part of a rethink of ties with Beijing that reflected a global "paradigm shift" in security and foreign policy," indicating a potentially more hawkish policy shift from Berlin.
