Germany Eyes First H2-Ready Power Plant Tender Late 2024

Germany is planning to launch the first tender for hydrogen-ready gas power plants by the end of this year or early next year, the economy ministry said, cited by Reuters.

  • Germany aims to tender 12.5GW of such power plants.
  • The government plans to tender with each around 5GW of capacity, 2GW of tenders for retrofitting old gas power plants for the use of hydrogen, 0.5GW of tenders for long-term storage and 0.5GW of hydrogen-only power plants.
  • Investment costs and the difference in operating costs between hydrogen and natural gas will be subsidised for 800 full-load hours per year once the switch to hydrogen is made, the ministry said.
  • The EC in June gave the government the informal approval to subsidise the planned projects.
