Germany's renewable energy share surged to 62.7% in 2024, with solar power setting a new record of 72.2TWh, accounting for 14% of total electricity generation, according to the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems.
- Wind power remained Germany's largest electricity source in 2024, generating 136.4TWh. Hydropower saw a slight increase, contributing 21.7TWh, while biomass plants, with an installed capacity of 9.1GW, generated 36TWh.
- Overall, total renewable energy generation reached 275.2TWh, marking a 4.4% increase compared to 2023.
- Lignite power dropped by 8.4% to 71.1TWh.
- Hard coal generation decreased 27.6% to 24.2 TWh.
- But natural gas rose 9.5% to 48.4TWh, with 25.6TWh used for industrial self-supply.
- Germany's CO2 emissions fell to 152mn/t in 2024, representing a 58% reduction from 1990 levels.
Battery storage in Germany saw significant growth in 2024, with installed capacity rising from 8.6GW to 12.1GW and energy storage increasing from 12.7GWh to 17.7GWh.
