Germany Issues Agreement for LEAG Lignite Exit Compensation

Germany’s economy ministry and the European Commission have given “in principle” greenlight for the compensation of up to €1.75bn for the lignite phase out Germany’s LEAG, the ministry said.

  • The EC launched a formal investigation procedure in March 2021 whether the compensation payment distorts free competition in the European market.
  • Previously, the Commission issued doubts whether the compensation should be approved as state aid.
  • LEAG’s 3GW Janschwalde lignite-fired pant will go offline at the end of 2028. The 2.575GW Boxberg lignite plant and the 1.6GW Schwarze Pumpe facility will go offline at the end of 2038. The 920MW Lippendorf Block R plant will go offline at the end of 2035, the latest Bnetza schedule showed.
