GERMANY: President-Prepared To Dissolve Bundestag After Confidence Vote

GERMANY

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is delivering a speech amid Germany's political instability. Says the '...end of the coalition is a political crisis we need to deal with'. Confirms that he is 'prepared to dissolve parliament after a confidence vote'. Says 'Our country needs stable majorities and a government capable of taking action.' Steinmeier: 'This is not a moment for tactics and trickery, but for reason and responsibility.'

  • The German president plays a largely ceremonial role in the country's politics, but does have a party to play in dissolving the Bundestag and dismissing/appointing ministers on the recommendation of the chancellor.
  • It remains to be seen whether Steinmeier's comments on his willingness to dissolve parliament influence whether a confidence vote (looking increasingly likely to take place next week) passes.
  • Following the collapse of the 'traffic light' coalition, Chancellor Olaf Scholz's gov't does not command a majority. It holds 325 seats to the opposition's 408. Should members from the centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU)/Christian Social Union (CDU), far-right Alternative for Germany, far-left Die Linke and Sara Wagenknecht Alliance, and the now-opposition Free Democrats vote against Scholz, the gov't will fall.
