Germany Saw 78 Hours of Negative Prices in May

Germany’s power market recorded 78 negative priced hours in May, compared with 50 hours in April according to Rabot Charge’s monthly analysis, cited by PV magazine.

  • German solar PV output averaged 11.67GW in May, up from 8.96GW in April, and up from 10.54GW in May 2023.
  • Onshore wind output in Germany averaged 8.32GW last month, down from 13.18GW in April and down from 9.07GW in May 2023.
  • German offshore wind output last month averaged 2.05GW, down from 3.03GW in April and down from 2.12GW in May 2023.
  • Germany could see more negative hours this month, especially on the weekends, with the latest renewables forecasts suggesting wind output to pick up from this weekend (8/9 June) while solar PV output is forecast to remain high, which is likely to pressure prices.
  • Germany: Wind for 5-11 June: 13.58GW (-199MW), 7.66GW (+886MW), 5.80GW (+1.29GW), 9.12GW (-2.50GW), 14.81GW (-5.84GW), 17.37GW (unchanged), 17.68GW (+257MW).
  • Germany: Solar for 5-11 June: 10.95GW (-387MW), 14.10GW (unchanged), 13.06GW (unchanged), 11.89GW (-248MW), 11.08GW (unchanged), 11.43GW (-467MW), 10.57GW (-407MW).
