GfK Consumer Confidence Sees Surprise Slide

GERMAN DATA
MNI (London)
GFK CONSUMER CONFIDENCE MAR -8.1; FEB -6.7
  • The GfK consumer sentiment index fell 1.4 points to a more pessimistic -8.1 in the March forecast, contracting unexpectedly following consensus expectations of a 0.4-point increase.
  • The unanticipated dip was driven by falling income expectations and buying propensity, due to the duality of both high inflation and the spike in Covid cases at the survey time.
  • Future economic expectations remained strong, ticking upwards by 1.3 points to 24.1, almost 16 points above the March 2021 level.
  • Expectations have been bolstered by easing pandemic restrictions, whilst both income expectations and propensity to buy fell due to high inflation squeezing disposable incomes.
