GOP Rep Biggs Maintains Opposition To McCarthy's Speaker Bid

US

Chad Pegram at Fox News has reported that Republican House Rep Andy Biggs (R-AZ) has continued to publicly oppose House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy's (R-CA) bid to become the next Speaker of the House of Representatives.

  • Pegram: "...Biggs says "I don't think so" when asked by colleague Rich Edson if there was a scenario where he could ever support McCarthy for Speaker. Biggs says McCarthy "has a body of work.""
  • McCarthy took the GOP nomination for Speaker in the aftermath of the Midterm elections and has been subject to persistent opposition from Biggs, and a group of right-wing House Republicans, who believe McCarthy bears responsibility for an underwhelming midterm performance.
  • McCarthy will require 218 votes to clinch the Speaker's gavel when the House enters session on January 3. As it stands, he doesn't have the requisite votes. The House clerk may repeat the vote call until a majority is achieved but there is little precedent for a majority party failing to elect a Speaker.
  • If McCarthy can't promptly secure the Speaker's gavel there may be consequences for the GOP's control of the chamber. In particular, nominating committee leadership and engaging in Congressional investigations.
