GOP Senators To Meet On Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal @ 1700ET

US

A group of Republican senators are set to meet to discuss the bipartisan infrastructure deal at 1700ET (2200BST, 2300CET, 0500HKT) as reports emerge of splits opening within the group.

  • Politico reports that six of the 11 Republican senators that had previously expressed support for the deal were now on the fence in the face of staunch opposition from the right of the party.
  • The 'core' support from the GOP for the bipartisan infra deal - Mitt Romney (R-UT), Lisa Murkowski (R-AS), Susan Collins (R-ME), Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Rob Portman (R-OH) - remains committed to the near-USD1trn deal. However, the 'peripheral' supporters of the deal in the GOP - Gerry Moran (R-KS), Mike Rounds (R-SD), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Thom Tillies (R-NC), Todd Young (R-IN) and Richard Burr (R-NC) - are seen as less committed to the plan.
  • Some have raised concerns over IRS enforcement mechanisms for funding the USD600bn of new spending in the plan, while some have raised the prospect of the bipartisan plan paving the way for a much larger USD6trn Democrat-only infrastructure bill. As Politico reports, many of the wavering senators are close to Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who has not yet stated whether he will support or oppose the plan.
  • Senate Democratic leadership is attempting to accelerate the legislative programme regarding an infra package, with the potential for a vote on a deal as early as next week.
