Gov't Considering Extending Tokyo State Of Emergency: Sankei

JAPAN PRESS

Japanese paperSankei reporting thatthe gov't is considering the extension of the COVID-19 quasi state of emergency measures in the capital, Tokyo, just weeks ahead of the scheduled start of the Olympic Games.

  • The extension of SoE measures would likely result in the Games' opening ceremony - scheduled for 23 July - being held without spectators.
  • The gov't of Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is already in a precarious position following a worse-than-expected result in Tokyo's Metropolitan Assembly elections held on 4 July. Suga's Liberal Democratic Party and its ally, the Komeito party, failed to win an outright majority in the capital's regional legislature in a result worse than opinion polls had indicated. An Olympic Games behind closed doors could dent the PM's popularity further ahead of the autumn's general election.
