Gov't Delegation Is In US To Discuss AGOA, S. Africa To Report Mining Data

  • Deputy President Paul Mashatile pushed back against allegations of corruption and embezzlement and told IOL that these accusations were part of a campaign aimed at "proving that he is not the right person for the job." In a weekend interview with City Press, Mashatile told the media that there was a conspiracy to remove him from the post, driven by the same people who wanted to prevent him from becoming Deputy President. He subsequently walked back on those comments, noting that President Ramaphosa convinced him that there was no such plot.
  • A high-level government delegation is on an unannounced trip to Washington DC to discuss South Africa's holding of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) Forum this year. This comes after a bipartisan group of US lawmakers called on the White House last month to move the summit to another country due to South Africa's stance on Russia's war against Ukraine. The delegation includes Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana, Trade Minister Ebrahim Patel and Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni
