Governing Party Support Slipping After PM Switch

SLOVAKIA

Support for Slovakia's governing 'Ordinary People' party (OL'aNO) has declined significantly over recent weeks following a scandal over Russian COVID-19 vaccines that saw PM Igor Matovic forced from office and replaced by Finance Minister Eduard Heger.

  • Slovakia, AKO poll: Voice – Social Democracy (HLAS-SD): 24% (-1), Freedom and Solidarity (SaS): 14%, OĽaNO: 10% (-3), Direction – Social Democracy (Smer-SD): 9%, Progressive Slovakia PS): 8%, SME Rodina (SR): 7% (+1), Christian Democratic Movement (KDH): 5%, Za Ludi (ZĽ): 4%, Aliancia-EPP: 4% (new). +/- vs. 8-12 March. Fieldwork: 12-17 April 2021. Sample size: 1,000
  • While the next election is not due until 2024, the ouster of Matovic has led to a deterioration in relations both in the governing coalition and OL'aNO, raising the risk of a collapse that at present would likely see former PM Peter Pellegrini's HLAS-SD in pole position to form a gov't.
