Government And Port Workers To Strike Today

ARGENTINA
  • Argentina’s Chubut province has threatened to withhold oil and gas resources from the government in response to Milei’s move to hold back 13.5 billion pesos in tax transfers from the province. The threat was support by the governors of six southern provinces who signed an open letter criticising the government’s decision. The government responded by saying that the money kept by the authorities represents debt owed by Chubut province and that the province should take the case to the justice system.
  • In other news, President Milei met with Donald Trump during a US conservative conference over the weekend and said he hopes he’ll return to the White House. Meanwhile, on the domestic front, government workers plan to strike today, demanding wage increases and the reintegration of dismissed employees. Port workers unions are also planning to strike today, while local media report that the country’s airline unions are aiming for a 24-hour strike on Feb. 28.
  • On the data front, the calendar is light this week. The focus will remain on the politics, with congress reconvening for regular sessions on March 1, and President Milei looking at ways to reissue his stalled omnibus bill.
