Government Inclined to Hold Elections on Planned May 14 Date

  • Bloomberg report that Turkey is leaning toward holding general elections in May unless political consultations suggest otherwise, a spokesman for President Erdogan said. “Right now, it looks like it will be on May 14,” a Presidential Spokesman told CNN television. Just two days ago, a government official said “it is very likely that an agreement will be reached on holding the election on June 18."
  • Turkey's tourism arrivals rose 56.5% y/y in January versus +26.79% in December, according to data released by the Turkish Culture & Tourism Ministry this morning.
  • Turkey sold $11.6 billion worth of bonds this year as of Feb 23, according to Bloomberg calculations using official data. The U.S. dollar value of lira bond sales reached $8.86 billion, up 32% versus the same period last year. Foreign-currency issuance was down 8.3% to $2.75 billion versus the same period last year, the lowest since 2018.
