Government spokesman Muller Says That Poland Won’t Pay Fines Imposed by EU Top Court

  • Polish Health Minister said yesterday that he sees a growing share of Omicron variant, but daily cases are likely to top a 20K. The 7-day MA of daily cases has risen from slightly 11K in the beginning of the month to 14,260.
  • In addition, economic data showed yesterday that core CPI inflation accelerated to 5.3% YoY in December (vs. 5.2% exp.), up from 4.7% the previous month.
  • This follows the positive surprise in headline inflation earlier this month, which also accelerated to 8.6% in December.
  • The sharp consolidation in PLN in the past two months has been supporting Polish equities since their local low reached in the end of November.
  • Government spokesman Piotr Muller said on TVP info this morning that the EU would act “unlawfully” if it decided to offset fines for Poland’s failure to close Turow lignite mine from the funds the country has allocated in the EU budget (BBG).
