Government Topline Funding Agreement Expected Soon

Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) the ranking Republican on the Senate Appropriations Committee has said he believes a topline spending figure will be agreed on soon.

  • The House voted 272-162 yesterday to pass a stopgap measure to extend federal government funding until March 11. The temporary funding bill is now moving to the Senate where Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has promised to ‘take it up quickly and in time’ to avert a government shutdown on February 18 and allow for negotiations over 2022 omnibus spending package.
  • It is unclear what concessions Democrat appropriators will have to reach a bipartisan agreement on spending. The main sticking points have been policy riders like the Hyde Amendment and a discrepancy between defence and non-defence spending.
