UK
UK: Gov't has submitted the Parliamentary Constituencies Bill, which intends to
redraw the UK's electoral map, but keeps number of MPs at 650.
- UK's constituency boundaries have not been updated since 2010, with data
collected as early as 2005.
- The electorate in Dec 2020 will be the basis for the review, with submission
date of July 2023 to come in for 2024 general election.
- Boundary reviews in the UK are nominally independent, meaning there can be no
US-style 'gerrymandering'. However, there is a likelihood that the new
boundaries will favour the Conservatives making Labour's task of overturning
80-seat Conservative majority in 2024 even more difficult.
- At present, the number of voters in each Conservative constituency is on
average around 3,800 higher than each Labour constituency. With the boundary
changes, each constituency would be allowed a margin of 5%+/- a set number of
constituents. This would see more Conservative seats split in two - providing
the party with an additional MP - while Labour seats may be consolidated from
two to one, subtracting an MP from the party's total.
