UK
UK: Gov't on course for two defeats in the Commons.
- Debate underway on 'Benn Bill' intended to force gov't to seek extension to
Art. 50 period to avoid no-deal Brexit.
- Following defeat for gov't last night in vote to seize order paper and present
Bill, it is overwhelmingly likely that the now-minority government of PM Johnson
will lose, potentially by a larger margin.
- Final vote likely to take place around 1900BST, with approval sending Bill
onto the Lords for debate tomorrow.
- After this the gov'ts motion to call early election will be tabled and voted
on.
- With Labour MPs looking likely to abstain or vote against any such attempt
until Benn Bill has passed Lords or even has Royal Assent, PM could find his
hands tied in being forced to seek Art. 50 extension.
