Grangemouth Refinery Set to Close in Spring 2025

REFINING

Scotland’s Grangemouth crude oil refinery is set to close in spring 2025 according to STV.

  • The only crude oil refinery in Scotland is set to cease operations in under 18 months with the sites set to become a fuel import and distribution hub according to owners Petroineos.
  • The refinery is one of only six remaining in the UK and supplies 80% of the country’s fuel.
  • Demand for the fuels it produces was expected to decline with the energy transition well under way. The refinery faced a future of ‘unsustainable levels of losses’ said Petroineos.
  • The refinery is responsible for 4% of Scotland’s GDP and about 8% of its manufacturing base, STV said.
