Groningen Gas Extraction Stopped 1 October

NATURAL GAS

Extraction from the Groningen gas field in the northeastern Netherlands has stopped as of 1 October, after ministers gave final approval following a decision in June according to a government statement.

  • The closure is not entirely irrevocable. The wells could be reopened if there is a combination of a very cold winter and gas storage issues, the government said earlier this year.
  • Extraction dismantlement will begin from October 2024.
