Growing Spain and Morocco Ties Threatens Algerian Gas Flows

Spain and Morocco will hold their first bilateral summit in eight years on Thursday as they seek to strengthen economic ties.

  • The move has drawn threats from Algeria that is could cut the flow of natural gas as tensions between the two nations remains strained.
  • Algerian gas flows to Europe fell by around 6 Bcm in 2022, totaling 44 Bcm last year, as lower LNG exports to the Continent and reduced transit to Spain were only partially offset by burgeoning energy ties with Italy.
  • Algerian gas is seen as a key source for the EU to move away from Russian flows.
