UK: Guardian-No Tax Changes In 26 March Spring Statement

UK

Pippa Crerar at The Guardian posts on X: "I understand that Rachel Reeves will NOT be making any tax changes next week in her spring statement. She has previously said she wouldn’t extend freeze on the income tax threshold - this hasn’t been ruled out but it would be at autumn budget. Tories have suggested govt is planning move for next week."

  • At Prime Minister's Questions earlier, main opposition centre-right Conservative party leader Kemi Badenoch asked PM Sir Keir Starmer to repeat a commitment from Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves, made in the 2024 Budget that the freeze to income tax thresholds (referred to as a 'stealth tax') will not be extended beyond April 2028. Starmer refused to do so, but if the Guardian's reporting is correct then Reeves may hold back from announcing an extension in next week's statement.
