Haley Eyes Gains On Trump In Next GOP Presidential Debate

US

The next Republican Presidential debate will take place in Iowa on January 10. The field is expected to be cut to just two candidates with former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy appearing unlikely to cross the polling threshold required to make the stage.

  • Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley will attend the debate, former President Donald Trump is expected to skip the event again to take part in a town hall with Fox News at the same time.
  • The debate will be the last chance for Haley and DeSantis to boost their long shot hopes of taking the GOP nomination before the Iowa caucuses on January 15. Trump is the overwhelming favourite to win in Iowa meaning focus will likely shift to Haley’s run to the New Hampshire primary on January 16 where she is seen as a more credible threat to Trump.
  • Nathaniel Rakich at 538 write: "...in New Hampshire, Trump's 18-point lead in the polls is somewhat less commanding [than Iowa]: An upset win by Haley, who has recently moved within striking distance of him, isn't out of the question. According to 538's New Hampshire polling average as of Tuesday morning, Trump was at 44 percent and Haley was at 26 percent."
