ISRAEL: Hamas Calls For Escalation In Fight Against IDF In West Bank Amid Raid

ISRAEL

Al Arabiya posts on X: "Hamas calls upon Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank to escalate fighting against Israeli forces in response to a military offensive in the city of Jenin." The ongoing raid in Jenin has killed six and wounded 35 according to the Palestinian Authority. Times of Israel reported earlier a source claiming the IDF action is set to last 'several days'.

  • A statement from PM Benjamin Netanyahu said: "Under the guidance of the Security Cabinet, the IDF, the Shin Bet, and the Israel Police today launched a broad and significant military operation to eradicate terrorism in Jenin—"Iron Wall." This is another step toward achieving the goal we set: strengthening security in Judea and Samaria. We are acting systematically and resolutely against the Iranian axis wherever it extends its reach—in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Judea and Samaria. And more is yet to come."
  • Given the precarious nature of the ceasefire in Gaza, it remains to be seen whether Hamas' comments are viewed as a threat to the peace deal. By calling for Palestinians in the Fatah-controlled West Bank to fight the IDF, rather than Hamas in Gaza, it could be seen that the comments do not break the ceasefire deal. Earlier, a Hamas official confirmed that the group intends to release four female hostages on Saturday 25 Jan in exchange for a group of Palestinian prisoners.
