Head Of Iranian Rev Guard: JCPoA No Longer Required Even If US Returns

MIDEAST

Reports from Middle Eastern media that the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Major General Hossein Salami has stated that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA, the Iran nuclear deal) is no longer required, even if the US were to seek to become a signatory once again under the Biden administration.

  • The JCPoA was originally signed in 2015 under President Barack Obama's administration, but President Donald Trump withdrew the US as a signatory of the deal in 2018.
  • Earlier this year, Tehran announced it would begin to enrich uranium to 20%, well above the 5% purity required for civilian power generation and putting it closer to the 90% purity level designated as weapons-grade, sparking immediate outrage from the western signatories of the JCPoA (France, Germany, UK) and the US.
  • With UN weapons inspectors also at risk of being denied entry to Iranian plants the prospects of a significant improvement in relations between the West and Iran at present seem very slim, even with the upcoming departure of President Trump from office.
